Canggu has dozens of gyms, boutique studios, and wellness hubs now, and most of them opened in just the past few years. So if you’re looking for a place to train, it’s fair to ask which ones are actually reliable and which ones just rode a passing trend. One honest way to check is simple: look at how long a place has actually been operating, and how many shifts in the local fitness scene it’s survived.
Phase 1: The Yoga & CrossFit Pioneers (2012–2015)
Before Canggu became known for commercial gyms the way it is today, the town’s physical culture revolved around two very different poles.
On one side was yoga and holistic wellness, driven by places like The Practice and Samadi Bali. The focus was a complementary healthy lifestyle for the surfers who had already made Canggu home.
On the other, around 2013 to 2015, CrossFit and functional training started making inroads through places like CrossFit Wanderlust in Padang Linjong. This became one of the main entry points for athletes, high-intensity training enthusiasts, and expats who wanted structured training facilities, not just surfing.
At this stage, conventional gyms with full weight rooms and city-standard facilities were still largely absent from Canggu.
Phase 2: The Trend Explosion (2016–2019)
This was the period when modern fitness centers became part of mainstream lifestyle in Canggu. Not coincidentally, it’s also when the global digital nomad wave began flooding into the town in real numbers.
Remote workers arriving in Canggu brought expectations shaped by metropolitan fitness standards: full weight rooms, central air conditioning, structured class schedules, not just makeshift training spaces. That demand fueled a new wave of functional gyms and modern studios, including names like S2S CrossFit and Canggu Nest, concentrated around Berawa and Batu Bolong.
Gyms also started evolving beyond pure weight rooms into full packages that included protein cafes, smoothie bowls, and lounge space. This was the early beginning of the gym as a social space, not just a training space.
Avenue Fitness Canggu opened its doors in 2016, right at the start of this trend explosion. We weren’t chasing a market that had already formed. We arrived exactly as demand for internationally standard gyms in Canggu first became real.
Phase 3: Social Clubs & Recovery Centers (2021–Present)
Post-pandemic, the definition of “gym” in Canggu shifted again. The focus used to be purely on physical training, lifting or CrossFit. Since 2021, the trend has moved toward integrated wellness concepts, often described as mega wellness clubs.
Recovery facilities like ice baths, saunas or steam rooms, rooftop pools, and pilates reformer studios have become close to standard, not just a bonus feature. A new generation of Canggu gyms, Avenue Fitness Canggu among them, redefined what a gym actually is during this period. Training space started connecting with coworking areas and dining, turning the gym into a place to socialize as much as a place to work out.
Since 2022, this trend has expanded further into communal sports: padel tennis, run clubs, and boutique boxing studios. We’ve added our own version of that shift at Avenue Fitness Canggu, with boxing and Muay Thai classes alongside ARC (Avenue Running Club).
Concrete Proof: The 2023 Renovation and Beyond
Talk is easy. Here’s what “adapting through each phase” actually looked like for us in practice.
In 2023, Avenue Fitness Canggu went through a major overhaul. Not a cosmetic touch-up, but a full renovation. The interior was rebuilt around a more modern, futuristic look, moving well past the basic gym aesthetic that defined the space when it first opened in 2016. Alongside the visual overhaul came a complete brand refresh, including a new logo and identity.

The equipment changed just as significantly. Among the additions were Hoist and Intenza machines, equipment that reflects the same shift the rest of Canggu’s fitness scene was making at the time: away from basic free-weight setups and toward the more complete, higher-end training environments members now expect.
Two year later, that same reinvestment extended beyond the gym floor. In 2025, we launched ARC (Avenue Running Club), a direct response to the run club trend reshaping Canggu’s communal fitness scene, and a way to build community around training that doesn’t happen on a machine or under a barbell.

This kind of update doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because a gym is paying attention to where the industry is moving and reinvesting to keep up. That’s the same pattern that separates the places still open today from the ones that didn’t make it past their first trend cycle.
Why This History Matters If You’re Choosing a Gym
These three phases reveal a clear pattern: Canggu’s fitness scene moves fast, and plenty of places that thrived in one phase didn’t survive into the next. Opening a gym to ride a rising trend is far easier than sustaining it through shifting market expectations, from a basic lifting space, to metropolitan-standard facilities, to a full social club with recovery amenities.
Avenue Fitness Canggu has lived through all three phases since opening in 2016, and not just survived them. We’ve kept reinvesting as the standards around us changed. The clearest examples are the major renovation in 2023 and the launch of ARC in 2025.
